Various weather-tightness warranties are available depending on the level of coverage that is desired by the customer. Metl-Span engineering and marketing must review the architectural and structural blue-line drawings to determine whether the project will qualify for a weather-tightness warranty. The panels must be installed by a trained qualified erector and progress and final inspections may be required.
CFR roof panels meet Class A fire classification requirements of the major model building codes.
CFR roof panels have been tested and have received approval for Factory Mutual 1-90, Factory Mutual 4471 and UL-90. The panels have also been subjected to ASTM E-1592 and Florida Building Code testing with acceptable results.
Unlike single-skin, standing-seam roof systems, the CFR roof system when installed with Metl-Span diaphragm clip provides a limited range structural diaphragm resistance. Consult Metl-Span’s engineering department for details and capacities.

Expansion and contraction are accommodated by thermal bowing of the panel between its attachments to the roof structure and is equally divided between the individual spans.
Roof penetrations for small pipes and ducts may be flashed with standard metal roof pipe flashing consisting of a flexible boot and a metal-backed sealing flange. For larger penetrations, a curb designed for use with insulated panels are used. Curbs should be purchased from specialty manufacturers who have specific solutions for insulated panels.
The CFR roof system provides a uniform insulation value of R8.7 or R9 per inch, depending on foam system. The insulation value of polyisocyanurate boards is R6.25 per inch, extruded polystyrene is R5.5 per inch and fiber glass is R3 per inch.
Metals have a history of longevity and studies have been conducted on roofs over 30 years old to see how they were performing. The results of the study show the expected life of the roof system is over 60 years. There are a number of variables that need to be considered, but when correctly designed, installed and maintained insulated panels will provide more than 60 years of performance. The expected maintenances is cleaning the walls or roofs at least yearly, the panels are not exposed to standing water or corrosive environments and the coating is repainted as it reaches the end of it’s life span. Most coatings are warrantied for over 30 years.

There are minimum insulation values required by code, based on your climate zone and building application. This would dictate the minimum panel thickness you are able to use.
Insulated panels are commonly used for roofs and walls in industrial and commercial applications. In cold storage applications they are also used for ceilings and interior partitions. In special applications like data centers the panels can function as plenums to direct airflow through the building. For fire rated construction the Thermal Safe mineral wool core panels are used in the fire barrier assemblies.

IMPS is a one component system that when installed provides a high performance thermal, air & vapor barrier along with an interior and exterior finished system system. The system is used in all environments including temperate, cold, hot, humid and marine environments.
CFR roof panels are factory assembled self-contained units consisting of roof weather membrane, roof insulation and liner decking. This provides factory control of the roof’s materials, fit-up and performance, eliminates the potential for misapplication of the vapor barrier and provides the efficiency and control of a single-source installation for the complete roof system. One-step installation process assures rapid completion of the roof system. Multiple steps to separately lay down a deck, vapor barrier, insulation and a metal panel or membrane are eliminated.
The typical maximum length is 50’. Endlaps are required for longer runs from ridge to eave. Endlaps consist of an extension of the top metal skin of the panel and butt joining of the foam core and the bottom skin. The end of each panel is supported by the roof structure. The lapped faces are sealed with specially designed sealants and fasteners to create a gasket-type joint that effectively resists water penetration. Individual plant fabrication length restrictions may supercede the std. max length of 50ft.
Recommended roof pitch for CFR minimum is 1/2″/ft. 1/4″/ft may be considered upon conditional review. For example: 1/4″/ft is allowed iff: a) Single and multi course panel runs with snow loads* of 30 PSF or less. Panel runs are defined as the distance from the eave to the ridge or high eave; b) Maximum panel runs of 150’; c) Maximum purlin spacing 5’-0”; d) Light colors or Galvalume exterior finish. Additional considerations must be approved by Metl-Span.

The CFR can be installed down to slopes of 1/4″ in 12″, however the roof structure must be designed to accommodate temporary and long term loads to ensure positive drainage. An example of a temporary loads are snow or heavy rain. Permanent loads are HVAC equipment. Foam panel react to thermal stress by bowing, if the roof structure is deflecting due to loads while the insulated panel is under thermal bow water can pond at the end laps. Single skin panels on the other hand expand and contract linearly rather than by bowing up between the structural supports.
The panels will support foot traffic during erection and for roof and equipment maintenance. However, the panel should be protected from excessive wear and tear by the application of a proper roof walkway system.
